Orchestral Works 1 $7.99 This monaural release on Naxos' "Historical" label provides not only a fine selection of Delius' works by perhaps his most talented musical advocate, Sir Thomas Beecham, but also an apt glimpse into Delius' stylistic development between 1899 and 1920, just before the latter's health began to decline in 1922. Recordings from the years 1927-34 illustrate the welcome convergence of a conductor at the height of his career--it was in 1932 that Beecham founded the renown London Philharmonic Orchestra--and the orchestral works of a composer's creative maturity.The earliest works of Delius presented here, the nocturnal symphonic poem 'Paris' (1899) and the closing scene from his opera 'Koanga' (1904), successfully combine Wagnerian harmonic pacing with Mahler's melodic style. Contrarily, the 1913 'Two Pieces for Orchestra' are strongly impressionistic, in the manner of Debussy, with a less goal-oriented, aphoristic atmosphere. 'Eventyr', another symphonic poem, and the two selections from the incidental music to 'Hassan', a successful verse drama by the noted lyrical poet James Elroy Flecker, dating from 1919 and 1920, respectively, present Delius' individual idiom, with its concentrated harmonic tension and lucid orchestral colors. |
