Sinatra/Jobim: The Complete Reprise Recordings $12.99 Full performer name: Frank Sinatra/Antonio Carlos Jobim. This compilation album gathers tracks from two sets of recording sessions Frank Sinatra did with Brazilian singer/songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim, one in 1967 and another in 1969. The first set of sessions in late January and early February 1967 resulted in the ten-track LP Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim, released later in 1967. Jobim joined Sinatra, singing on such tracks as "The Girl from Ipanema," "I Concentrate on You," and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," with bossa nova arrangements by Claus Ogerman. The second set of sessions held in February 1969 were intended for a follow-up LP to be called SinatraJobim that got as far as having an album cover designed, but never came out. Most of the tracks were issued in 1971, during Sinatra's temporary retirement, on an album called Sinatra & Company, although a couple turned up on singles in the U.S. or overseas, and the Sinatra/Jobim duet "Off Key (Desafinado)" sat in the can for decades, not turning up until the box set The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings in 1995. Despite being separated by two years, the first ten tracks and the second ten fit well together. Sinatra sings gently and sensitively throughout. The chief difference lies in the musical backing, as the 1969 tracks were arranged by Eumir Deodato, with orchestra conducted by Morris Stoloff, and they have less of a Brazilian feel. Still, the sessions have always belonged together on a single disc, and they constitute a special niche in the Sinatra catalog. ~ William Ruhlmann |

Sinatra & Company $12.99 Producers: Sonny Burke, Don Costa and Frank Sinatra.Includes liner notes by Charles Champlin. In 1969, Frank Sinatra recorded a second album with Antonio Carlos Jobim. For unknown reasons, Reprise decided not to release Sinatra-Jobim, but seven of the ten songs intended for the record did appear on the first side of 1971's Sinatra & Company. The selections from Sinatra-Jobim have a decidedly different flavor than the material on Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim, largely due to the charts of arranger Eumir Deodato. Where Claus Ogerman's arrangements were quite subdued and understated, Deodato's charts are looser and more relaxed; consequently, the music is lighter, more immediate, and arguably more fun. Sinatra responds to the arrangements with more forceful singing than on the previous Jobim collaboration, but his phrasing is still more nuanced than even his soft pop/rock-oriented material. Nevertheless, that subtle phrasing carries over into the second side of Sinatra & Company, a collection of pop-oriented tracks. Although the music on the second half of the album is neither as adventerous or as compelling as that on the first, it is still highly entertaining. The seven songs were arranged by Don Costa, who keeps the material shiny and commercially oriented. In the case of "Close to You," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "I Will Drink the Wine," "Bein' Green," and "Sunrise in the Morning," that isn't bad -- this is material that demands to be delivered in slick, polished arrangements. Under Costa's direction, these songs are given arrangements that feature both strings and gentle folk-rock underpinnings, particularly strummed acoustic guitars. Taken on its own terms, the second half of Sinatra & Company ranks as some of his best soft rock-influenced material of the late '60s, even if it doesn't sit comfortably with the excellent bossa nova that comprises the first side of the record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine |

The Concert Sinatra [LP] $36.98 Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor, arranger).Includes liner notes by Lawrence D. Stewart.Digitally remastered by Lee Hershberg.Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor, arranger).Includes liner notes by Lawrence D. Stewart.Recorded in 1963 between the ultra-swinging SINATRA-BASIE and SINATRA'S SINATRA, THE CONCERT SINATRA is a short, richly musical set of classic theatre songs, some of which ("Ol' Man River," the "Soliloquy" from CAROUSEL, "Bewitched" from PAL JOEY ) were milestones in Sinatra's earlier career. Here arranger Nelson Riddle is allowed to work with a large symphony orchestra and the results once more are a textbook example of fine orchestration. The formal settings do not prevent Riddle from handling this potentially "heavy" material with his characteristically deft touch. For instance, Sinatra/Riddle's sure reading of the epic "Ol' Man River" is far superior to the over-the-top Alex Stordahl-arranged '40s version. Sinatra is in fine voice throughout; no evidence here of the increasingly rough delivery which came to characterize his '60s output. The classiest of the Reprise albums. |

Sinatra Swings [Delta] $12.99 Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Billy May (conductor, arranger).SINATRA SWINGS was originally released on LP as SWING ALONG WITH ME in 1961 and is also available on Reprise (47272) as the original title.Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Billy May (conductor, arranger).SWING ALONG WITH ME is part of that group of Sinatra recordings driven by the irresistibly swinging, jazzy arrangements of Billy May. A man of no uncertain gifts, May was possessed of the uncanny ability to write horn charts that could simultaneously fuel and tend Sinatra's vocal fire. There's no bittersweet introspection here, instead Sinatra lets loose on a batch of uptempo tunes that allow him to show off his chops. Sure, songs like "Don't Cry Joe" provide relief from the prevailing brisk tempos, but even the relatively placid moments here sparkle with such alacrity that they don't slow the pace. Even when Sinatra's delivering one of the most pessimistic lyrics of his career on the undeservedly obscure "The Curse Of An Aching Heart," he's backed by such an effervescent arrangement that he sounds like he's getting a cathartic thrill out of his tale of woe. |
